Big Play for Little Learners: New pre-K playgrounds for Early Learning

Thanks to the 2017 Bond, early learners will soon enjoy safer, smarter, and more engaging spaces to grow and play.

This summer, Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) is delivering a major upgrade to all four of its Schools for Early Learning with brand-new playgrounds. These fresh, modern outdoor spaces are designed to give our youngest learners a safe, engaging environment where they can play, explore, and thrive.

Through funding from voter-approved bonds, crews are hard at work replacing aging playground equipment. These new playgrounds are designed with early childhood development in mind, offering safer structures, better accessibility, and more opportunities for imaginative, social, and physical play.

“Outdoor play is a vital part of how young children learn,” said April Falcon-Blanco, SBISD Director of Pre-K and Early Childhood Programs. “The playground isn’t just for recess. It is an extension of the classroom where children connect their minds and bodies, explore ideas, and express who they are. We’re deeply grateful to our community for making this meaningful investment in our youngest learners.”

Why new playgrounds matter

Over time, equipment naturally wears down, surfaces become less safe, and drainage issues can turn a play space into a puddle. That’s why the upgrades go beyond new swings and slides — they include improved fall protection, better drainage, and more inclusive, developmentally appropriate designs.

“Our goal is to make sure our pre-K students have the same high-quality experience, whether they’re in the classroom or outside,” said Travis Stanford, Associate Superintendent of Operations. “This is about whole-child development — and about creating environments where Every Child feels welcome, safe, and ready to learn through play.”

Learning happens everywhere

From climbing and balancing to pretending and problem-solving, play helps young children develop essential life skills — including language, collaboration, empathy, and emotional regulation. And it all starts on the playground.

“Some of the most important learning happens outside,” Falcon-Blanco said. “It’s where many children learn how to make friends, take turns, or try something new. That’s powerful.”

A community that believes in kids

These playground improvements are only possible because of our community’s support — a powerful reflection of shared values and belief in the importance of early education.

“Thank you to our community for continuing to invest in our students,” said Stanford. “This project shows what’s possible when we come together to support learning from the very beginning.”
